When they stood again, the light was still racing off into the distance, farther than the eye could see.
âThis is astonishing. I do wish Vren could see this.â Virid was grinning from ear to ear, reaching out to touch one of the carvings âwhat is this?â
âWriting.â
Virid pulled his hand away as Kye picked up the torch again, though it was hardly needed with the ambient light and glow from every stone.
âWriting? Aboutâ¦the war?â
Kye nodded, biting down on her bottom lip. The stories flowed up the walls, over the ceiling and into one another.
They were in the middle of the passage now, and the memories written up along the sides of the walls had taken on a different, desperate tone. As easy to read as if they were speaking to her.
âThis canât be happeningâ
âWe canât be losing.â
âWhy isnât it over?â
âKye?â
The shadow blinked and took a deep breath through her nose. It smelled like cold here. Why did cold have a smell? She had to compose her face, slip back into her mask.
âTheyâre losing,â she finally managed, mounting the slope up through the Hollow as her fatherâs people fell.
âThe island is red with darkblood.â
âCold, cold that could freeze my very soul,â
Virid followed Kye quickly, taking the torch from her when her arm dropped. The Hollow told the story of the Dark War, from beginning to end.
The light writing became more and more sparse as Kye and Virid followed the path. At least the prince was being silent now. Maybe he could feel the weight of this place too, even without knowing the words.
âShe killed Knoxa, our fate is sealed.â
Kye paused and sighed.
âThe queen is dead.â
She could hear Virid, swallowing thickly, as their footsteps echoed through the last part of the cave.
âNythia lost her arm.â
âWho will lead us now?â
âThere is no one.â
Kye felt a tug on her cloak, Virid calling her to a stop right before the stone door in front of her nose.
They were at the end of the Hollow.
âKye, I-â
The stone slid back to free them, and all the light behind them rushed forward. Virid jumped as all the blue returned to the glass tips of the torch. When the moonlight fell on them, the torch extinguished.
Leaving the last message to flicker just once.
âDarkness has fallen.â
